PURPOSE:To obtain phenols useful as an antioxidant, etc., readily in high yield and industrially advantageously, by using a heteropoly acid as a catalyst and reacting phenols containing at least one tertiary butyl group with an aromatic compound. CONSTITUTION:Phenols containing at least one tertiary butyl group is reacted with an aromatic compound in the presence of 0.01-10wt% based on the phenols of a heteropoly acid catalyst at 80-200 deg.C for 0.5-10hr at normal pressure or under reduced pressure and the tertiary group is rearranged to give the aimed compound. Tungstosilicic acid, tungstophosphoric acid, molybdosilicic acid, etc., are preferably used as the heteropoly acid. Side reactions are few, the heteropoly acid can be taken out after the reaction, reused and cost of the heteropoly acid can be reduced. Corrosive properties of device are low and use of a device of inexpensive material is sufficient. |
