The title compds.(II; R = C1-12 alkyl, C3-12 cycloalkyl,C7-11 aralkyl), useful as photostabilizers,polyolefin reformers and lubricating oil additives, were prepd. by the reaction of I and S2CI2 at -10-40≦̸C in-the presince of Lewis acid catalyst. Thus, 43.2 g p-cresol was treated with 22.6 g S2CI2 at 0-10≦̸C for 2 hr in the presence of 0.5 g ZncI,and the reaction products were stirred for 2 hr to give 42.8g 2,2'-bis(4-methylphenol)sulfides(m.p. 112-114≦̸C).
