Polyamides are prepared from oxalic acid, a mono- or di-methyl substituted hexamethylene diamine having the methyl groups in the 2-, 3-, 4- or 5-positions, and a high molecular weight polyether having amide-forming end groups, e.g. COOH, lower alkyl ester or amino groups. The preferred polyether is polyethylene oxide with more than 20 repeating units. Preferably the mixed polyether and diamine are allowed to react with the alkyl or aryl ester of oxalic acid. The products have reduced tendency to accumulate electrostatic charge and can be dyed with acid dyestuffs. In examples: (1), (2) and (3) polyoxyethyl-a ,o -dicarboxylic acid is added to 3-methylhexamethylene diamine in methanol and the solution mixed with diethyl oxalate and heated at low pressure to give a polymer suitable for melt-spinning. Example (4) is similar but uses a mixture of 2- and 3-methylhexamethylene diamines. The polyoxyethylene - a ,o - dicarboxylic acid was prepared by oxidation of polyoxyethyloxy glycol with nitric acid containing copper and ammonium metavanadate as catalysts. Specification 781,289 is referred to. |
