The drafting machine has an arm (4), which is movable over a drawing surface (3), and an end of self-supporting construction. Mounted on the arm (4) is a carriage (5) which can be moved along said arm and carries a drawing instrument. The arm (4) is mounted by means of support rollers (18, 19, 20) on a guide rail (24) and can be moved along the latter over the drawing surface (3). It is pressed into its drawing position by magnetic force and its free end can be raised counter to the effect of the magnetic force. <IMAGE>
