<p>Apparatus for fitting split pins e.g. into a hole (4a) in a rod or spindle (4), carries out the operation in four successive stages. A longer stroke is required for the first stage (a). Inside a pressure block (39) which is lowered towards a block (5) carrying the rod are mounted three sliding blades (11 to 13). The central blade (12) has a pointed edge which is forced downwards to project from the other two, to slide between the two prongs (6b,c) of the split pin (6) to force them apart. This forms the first two stages. In the next stage the two outer blades are extended level with the middle blade to force the prongs further apart. In the final stage, the pressure block is lowered and the blades retracted so that the block folds the prongs backwards against the rod.</p> |
