A housing has a shaft carrying a weight at one end, having a rotatable bearing inside it. A pull rope can be wound or unwound from the shaft and is connected to that end of the shaft opposite to the weight and anchored to the housing at its other end. The main part of the rope is guided over a reversing roller having its bearing on a hand grip independent of the housing. The kinetic energy of the weight can be transmitted on to the pull rope by a sliding clutch located between the weight and the shaft.
