Coating of coils of wide steel strip - with copper, its alloys or other metals, esp. before strip is used to mfr. ship hulls

The coil is unwound and covered with a granulate of Cu or its alloys or other metals, and is then subjected to tensile stress while travelling through a continuous furnace in which the granulae melts to form a coating. The straightening machines are pref. employed to apply a tensile stress to the moving strip. A single process pref. combines the coating operation with normalising and straightening of the strip. Process is esp. where hot rolled strip is coated with Cu or other metals before being used to mfr. ships hulls. The coating prevents the fouling and corrosion of the hull.
