A series of tanks under the earth are connected together at their corners by thermo-formed polypropylene, tubular elements. These have longitudinal slots in their walls so as to fit over the rims of adjacent tanks. The walls of the tanks have aligned openings sealed together to permit the passage of water from one to the other. A system of wicks supplies water by capillary action to a thin layer of absorbent material lying between the overlying earth and the tanks.
