The mat'l is active C that contains at least 1 uniformly dispersed metal (Ca,Mg,Ba,Al,Cu, transition metals). The metal content is 10-35 w/o. It is made by reacting a polyhexose deriv. with metal cations in soln., pyrolysis of the reaction product, and activation. It is both an adsorbent and a catalyst and is suitable for cigarettes and for removing toxic substances from blood. Thus, a 10 % aq. CM-cellulose soln. 2000 a 5 % aq. CaCl2 soln. 500 mL, and concd. H2SO4 6 drops were mixed and the mixt. was stirred 1h at room temp. and 2hr pyrolyzed and activated in N with a progressive increasing of the temp. to 850oC.
