The socket (1) allows a discharge lamp (2) to be fitted into a headlight lamp socket. It comprises a holder (3) with two support pins (4) at the rear similarly shaped to the terminal pins of the removed headlight lamp. Each side of the holder supports a stirrup (5) between which the discharge lamp is supported. Pref. the holder (3) comprises a U shaped ceramic element with a pair of holes in its base (12) through which the support pins (4) are fitted and with a hole at the top of each arm (13) receiving a fixing screw (7) for one of the support stirrups (5). The adapter socket allows a standard headlight to be modified for use with a newer high output halogen metal vapour discharge lamp.
