The invention relates to a piston for an internal combustion engine having a combustion cavity 3 formed in the head of the piston. The edge 7 of the cavity where it opens to the crown 4 of the piston and the parts of the cavity wall adjoining the edge 7 are generally oval, e.g. elliptical, in shape viewed in a direction axially of the piston, and the minor axis X of the oval is disposed parallel to the axis of the bore means provided for receiving the gudgeon pin. The ratio of the minor axis of the oval to the major axis Y may be in the range 1:1.1 to 1:1.3. Preferably, the point of intersection of the axes of the oval substantially coincides with the lengthwise axis of the piston. The peripheral edge is advantageously continuously curved along its length and is symmetrical with respect to the axis of the piston. <IMAGE>
