The relief grinding device has a grinding wheel (22) with a bevelled grinding surface (26) whose bevel corresponds to the point angle of the drill (12) to be sharpened. Furthermore, a clamping fixture (10) is provided for clamping the drill (12) in the perpendicular axial position, which clamping fixture (10) can be moved tangentially to the grinding surface (26) in a reciprocating manner and axially up and down by actuating mechanisms (50, 72) and which as a result can at the same time be rotated as a function of its reciprocating movement by a rotary device coupled via a gear (44) in such a way that the drill surface to be ground comes into grinding contact with the grinding wheel (22) at a selectable point (82) of the grinding surface (26).
