The call-metering system has the calling subscriber releasing a request signal that causes metering pulses to pass to the tariff counter of the called subscriber instead of to the counter of the calling subscriber. Metering pulses are not sent to the calling subscriber. The number of the calling subscriber is converted at the called subscriber's end into a form suitable for calculating the rate for the call over the distance involved. The rate is used to control the passage of the metering pulses to the counter. The advantage lies in not charging callers for calls that are held at the called end (e.g. whilst the wanted personis sought).
