A telecommunications system which provides a simple and inexpensive two-way communications link comprises a highway 1 formed by a leaky electric cable, a plurality of outstations 4 at spaced positions along the highway, each of which outstations comprises a source 5 of radio frequency power, a data transmitter 6, an aerial 7 or other connection to the highway, and a receiver 8 for signals which control operation of the transmitter 6 or ancillary equipment, and, at any desired position along the highway, a control station 10 comprising a source 11 of radio frequency power, a data signal receiver and demodulator 12, a control signal transmitter 14, and an aerial 13 or other connection to the highway to enable control signals to be sent to the outstations 4 to control their operation in a desired sequence. <IMAGE>
