New hydroxynaphthyl-methane-phosphonic- and phosphinic acids and their esters have formula (I) (where each R is H, opt. halogen-substd. 1-4C alkyl or Ph; n is 1 or 0, provided that if n is 0 the R directly bonded to P is other than H; X and Y each is H, 1-4C alkyl, halogen, esp. Cl or Br, OH, 1-4C alkoxy or COOR1, in which R1 is H, 1-4C alkyl or Ph). (I) are used as anti-oxidants, stabilisers for plastics, coupling components for azo dyestuff prepn., metal ion-complex formers and metal working fluid constituents. Esters (I) can be obtd. in 70-95% yield and converted to the free acids or salts without wt. loss. In prepn., the by-prods. are valuable tert.amines.
