The display has front and rear electrode plates (12) respectively carrying a segmental display electrode (6..12) and a large area counter-electrode (13). The front electrode plate (1) at least is transparent with the sequential display electrode (6..12) provided by an applied conductive opaque layer coupled via insulated conductor paths (15) to connection terminals (16) at the edges of the plate (1). The conductor paths (15) are also opaque and are covered by a transparent insulating layer (17). They may be formed by the same coating material as the segmental display electrode (6..12). Pref. the entire front plate is coated with the opaque conductive material and etched to remove is except where the electrode segments (6..12) or conductor paths (15) are required, before coating the latter with a transparent silicon dioxide insulating layer.
