The process for the continuous calender finishing of a fabric (10) is to be improved in such a way that there is no longer any need for a caustic potash solution and a stretching of the fabric. The solution is that a woven or knitted fabric (10) consisting of cotton or containing cotton fibres is transported continuously through a high-pressure steamer (1) containing moist heat of high temperature and increased pressure and there is first saturated with a quantity of hot water sufficient for subsequent swelling and setting in the moist heat and then steamed. <IMAGE>
