Prepn. of boric acid (anhydrous or hydrated) with the formula B2O3xH2O, where x = 0-3, comprises hydrolysis of methyl borate, B(OMe)3 in a zone of hydrolysis of B(OMe)3 and water (1.3 mole of water per mole of B(OMe)3). The hydrolysis prod. are passed into a distn. column (boric acid and MeOH) together with a cpd. forming a hetero-azeotrope with MeOH having a b.pt. less than that of the azeotrope B(OMe)3-water. Into this column another cpd. is introduced which has a b.pt. greater than that of B(Ome)3 and which does not form an azeotrope with a b.pt. lower than the hetero-azeotrope. At the head of the column, the hetero-azeotrope recovered which is conveyed to a decanter in which the MeOH is separated from the hetero-azeotrope cpd., the latter being recycled to the column. At the base of the column a mixt. of at least one boric oxide (anhydrous or hydrated) and the cpd. having a B.pt. greater than B(OMe)3, is recovered. The oxidn. of saturated hydrocarbons using the prepd. boric oxides is also claimed.
