The quartz or Lithium tantalate piezo electric resonator consists of a cylindrical block with two parts. One a plate with electrodes on either side to and from which voltages are applied or removed and between which is the site of mechanical oscillations. The other plate does not resonate owing to its volume and provides a support for electronic components and the plate with the oscillating region in the centre. The second part is partially metallised with a good thermal conductor. The electronic components are a temperature sensor, a heating element and an oscillator driver. The arrangement reduces the thermal drive requirements and the response time to thermal transients of the resonator temperature stabilisation. A precise control of temperature can be achieved to enable short and medium term stability to be obtained with Lithium tantalate which has a high electromechanical coupling coefficient, but a steep frequency temperature characteristic.
|
