The method involves determining a reference value for an air ratio, and deactivating fuel injection of cylinders for a measuring time space. Another reference value of the air ratio is determined when the fuel injection of the cylinder is deactivated. The fuel injection of the cylinder is activated. A diagnostic information with respect to a component of an internal combustion engine is formed depending on the two references values, where the component influences accumulation of air-fuel-mixture. An independent claim is also included for a device for executing a method for operating an internal combustion engine.
