Process for the preparation of 3-amino-1-(alpha-carboxy-4-hydroxybenzyl)-2-azetidinone

N-Deacylation of 3-( alpha -substituted or unsubstituted glycinamido)-1-( alpha -carboxy-4-hydroxybenzyl)-2-azetidinone or a salt or ester thereof on the carboxyl group results in 3-ANA or a salt or ester thereof on the carboxyl group. The N-deacylation takes place in the presence of a microorganism culture broth, of a material obtained therefrom or of an aminopeptidase derived from the animal body, provided that each of these products is able to hydrolyse enzymatically the corresponding acid amide linkage. The substances are important intermediates for the preparation of other chemically modified compounds, for example 3-acylaminoazetidinone derivatives which have an antimicrobial action.
