<p>Catalyst for oxidising H2S and/or organic S cpds. to SO2 comprise one or more metals selected from Cu, Ag, Zn, Cd, Y, lanthanides, Cr, Mo, W, Mn, Fe, Co, Rh, Ir, Ni, Pd, Pt, Sn and Bi on a support comprising TiO2, ZrO2, SiO2, SiO2-MgO, SiO2-ZrO2, SiO2-TiO2, ZrO2-TiO2 or a zeolite with the proviso that the catalyst do not contain spinel-type mixed oxides. The catalyst are esp. useful for purifying Claus process tail gases. The catalysts have high activity, a long working life, and can be prepd. at temps. below 550 deg.C (cf. spinel-type catalysts, of FR2144148). Prefd. catalysts contain (A) one or more of Cu, Ag, Mo, W, Fe and Bi, and (B) one or more of the lanthanides, Cr, Co, Rh, Ir, Ni, Pt, Pd and Sn. The total metal content is pref. 0.005-10 mole % based on the support. The atomic ratio of group A metals to non-noble group B metals is pref. 0.1-10:1 and the atomic ratio of Group A metals to noble metals is pref. 20-1000:1. The support is pref. SiO2 with a specific surface of 50-600 square m/g or TiO2, ZrO2 or ZrO2-TiO2 with a specific surface of 5-250 square m/g.</p> |
