PURPOSE:To obtain an electrode containing a reduced amount of a platinum group metal, by making platinum group grains, which are prepared by mixing a platinum group complex solution with a reducing solution before the mixture solution is stirred by ultrasonic waves, to be dispersed over a catalyst carrier, being followed by affixing both the carrier and a binding agent to a base body of the electrode. CONSTITUTION:Activated carbon is added to a platnium group complex solution, for example, a hydrogen hexachloroplatinate (H2PtCl6) solution, before the mixture is stirred. The stirred mixture is added with a solution of a reducing agent such as formate or formaldehyde, for example, 10% sodium formate, before this mixture is transferred into an ultrasonic stirrer and is stirred for 3hr, thereby platinum complex ions being reduced. Thus obtained catalyst consisting of a carbon powder and platinum group grains dispersed on the carbon powder, is added with a suspension of tetrafluoroethylene. After that, thus prepared mixture is applied to a carbon sheet, thereby an electrode for a fuel cell being obtained. In the figure, 1 represents a fuel electrode; 2, an air electrode; 3, an electrolyte-holding layer; and 4, a carbon paper layer. |
