In appts. for positioning a partially toroidal grreen radial tire blank on the lower part of a vulcanising press, the blank is first engaged by a chuck(10) having expansible and contractible head engaging segment. The engaged blank is lowered into the press and during this movement a member on the chuck engages the upper plate of an extended air filled cylindrical curing bladder to depress it causing the bladder to gradually expand into the blank as the blank is lowered.
