Vertical movement of the manipulating arm of a nuclear reactor vessel testing appts. may be aressted by an emergency braking system(100) incorporating a shoe(110) which can come into contact with the main column(24) & the manipulating arm, in response to a signal which is produced when the speed of the manipulating arm exceeds a predetermined value. A brake lining(116) mounted on the manipulating arm guides the brake shoe in its contact. Problems associated with stopping the relatively heavy manipulating arm if it attains an excessive vertical speed are resolved, so that consequent damage to the arm and to the vessel of the nuclear reactor is prevented.
