PURPOSE:A mixture of carbonaceous aggregate and bitumen is heat treated to form a specific thermally reformed product, which is shaped and heat treated to make carbonaceous shaped articles with less inner defects, high isotropy and high strength in a short time. CONSTITUTION:A mixture of (A) 1pt.wt. of carbonaceous aggregate, preferably green coke of less than 30 micron average particle size, and (B) 0.5-5pts.wt. of bitumen containing less than 5% of quinoline-insoluble part and less than 5% of benzene-insoluble part such as soft pitch is stirred with heat at some 350-500 deg.C so that the bitumen is condensed until the quinoline-insoluble part becomes 10-85wt% and the quinoline-soluble but benzene-insoluble part becomes 5-40wt%. The resultant thermally reformed product is finely crushed and pressed into a shape without addition of fresh binder. Then, the shape product is heat treated in a graphitization furnace to give the high-strength carbonaceous shaped article. |
