On its border adjoining a floor (5) or wall, the multi-leaf wall element engages, by in each case a cavity of one of its leaves (1), around a moulding (7) which is fastened on the floor (5) or wall. The mouldings (7), two mouldings (7) in the case of a double-leaf wall element, are arranged in parallel. The at least two wall leaves (1) can be moved telescopically, independently of one another, with respect to one moulding (7) in each case. The two wall leaves (1) are separated from each other by a high-temperature-resistant insulating layer (13) which is not affected by the telescopic movement. The cavities which can change in height with the telescopic movement of the two wall leaves (1) and are located between the wall element and the floor (5) or the wall are preferably filled with a heat-insulating material (14', 14'') which can compress in the event of a fire and adjoins the insulating layer (13) directly. <IMAGE>
