The loading and unloading method is for tunnel furnace firing trucks, particularly those handling flat items such as porcelain plates, saucers etc. A combustion aid is used, the flat items being accommodated alongside each other on rectangular supports of the same depth as the flat items, and with distance pieces at the four corners. The rectangular supports are stacked to the height of the furnace and individually transferred mechanically from the truck platform to a conveyor transporting them with their longer sides past loading and unloading stations. Here the fired items are unloaded, and the stack of plates is loaded with green blanks and transferred to the truck platform.
