The proposed control system is used to regulate the speed of vehicles in a restricted zone to the maximum permitted value without action by the driver. Roadside transmitters signal the start, end, and maximum speed of a restricted section of road. Sensors and actuators on the vehicle generate optical and audible signals to warn the driver. At the start of a restricted section, automatic speed control is introduced and the driver warned to let go of the accelerator pedal. At the end of a section the auto control is cancelled and the driver warned in order to take control again. In an emergency the driver can take control by hard acceleration or braking. This action also activates external warnings, for example automatic flashing of headlamps or pulsating operation of the horn, for the duration of the rapid speed change. Slow braking or slow steady running does not activate the alarms.
