The invention relates to a fuel rod intended for a nuclear reactor and having a tubular self-supporting fuel cladding, in which there are accommodated a plurality of circular cylindrical fuel pellets which are stacked on one another between the ends of the fuel cladding and whose diameter is dimensioned such that a gap is formed between the inner wall of the fuel cladding and the lateral surface of the pellets when the pellets are centred in the fuel cladding. A graphite layer is provided between the fuel cladding and the lateral surface of the pellets. The invention consists in that a graphite layer is also present between the end faces of adjacent pellets.
