Aq. isotonic storage- and rinsing solns. for contact lenses contain EDTA or its Na salt, as complexing agent, and pref. also Na pyrosulphite, as anti-oxidant, in addn. to chlorohexidine and thiomersal, as preservative and disinfectant, and PVP as protecting polymer, in a buffered salt soln. having pH 7.4. The solns. are suitable for soft and hard lenses and also act as solvents for a protein-remover. EDTA prevents protein-remover inactivation. EDTA and sulphites form activators for the papain and chymopapain protease mixt. in protein-remover. The protein-remover soln. is not exposed to microbial attack. The preserving soln. is not inactivated by proteins. The anti-oxidant prevents rinsing soln. discolouration.
