PURPOSE:To reduce the directivity of a liquid-crystal display element, to increase the angle of a visual field, and to improve the contrast, by providing a liquid-crystal cell between two polarizing plates and by using positive nematic liquid crystal containing a bicolor substance with a specific light-absorption axis. CONSTITUTION:Between substrates 1 provided with transparent electrodes, nematic liquid crystal of positive dielectric anisotropy containing not less than one kind of bicolor substance 5 with the light-absorptive axis nealy in parallel to the long molecule axis is sealed to form a liquid-crystal cell. So that the deflection axes will be in parallel to substrate 1, two deflecting plates 4 are provided, and one deflecting plate 4 is arranged in parallel to the orientation direction of liquid-crystal molecules in contact with substrate 1. This structure exercises control over the quantity of light by optical rotation and that by the light absorption of bicolor substance 5 at the same time, so that the performance of light occlusion when there is much variation in the quantity of light and no voltage is applied will be improved. |
