<p>Electrochemical cell membrane consists of a polar, semi-permeable plastic foil as polar carrier, contg. pref. 0.01-10 (0.1-0.5)wt.%, w.r.t. total membrane wt., of uniformly distributed fine metal particle deposits. Pref. polar carrier is an inert plastic foil on which are grafted hydrophilic polymerisable monomers. The deposited metal can be Cu, Fe, Hg, Ni, Cd, Pt, Pd, Au or Ag. Pref. membrane prodn. comprises (a) impregnating a polar semi-permeable plastic foil carrier with an aq. metal salt soln., (b) removing metal salt adhering to surface and (c) reducing the metal cations, in the impregnated carrier, to metal by treatment with a chemical reducing agent, dissolved or dispersed in a solvent. Membrane use in prim- and sec. elements, esp. in alkaline batteries, is claimed. Other uses are dialysis, electrodialysis, electrolysis, in fuel cells and biological systems.</p> |
