PURPOSE:To prevent a discharge lamp from fully lighting out by performing lighting with a hgih pressure discharge lamp as a rule and making discharge, using a discharge gap until the high pressure lamp is restarted. CONSTITUTION:A discharge lamp is connected to a power supply 25 through a ballast 24. When power voltage is applied, a high pressure discharge lamp 8 starts discharging and the current controlled by the ballast 24 is applied. After discharge is started, the high pressure discharge lamp 8 reaches the stable lighting state in approximately five minutes. Once the high pressure discharge lamp 8 has lit out due to the temporary breakdown of power supply voltage, discharge occurs between the main electrode 15 of a discharge gap 13 and its auxiliary electrode 22 and is transferred to the gap between the main electrodes 15 and 16. As a result, the discharge gap 13 reaches the stable discharge. |
