A process for the hydrodesulphurization of a sulphur-containing petroleum oil containing residual components comprises contacting said oil with hydrogen at mild hydrodesulphurization conditions in the presence of a porous hydrodesulphurization catalyst comprising an oxide and/or sulphide of nickel and/or cobalt and an oxide and/or sulphide of molybdenum and/or tungsten deposited on a support material comprising 1 to 6 weight per cent silica and 94 to 99 weight per cent alumina, the catalyst having a major portion of the pore volume and surface area in pores having diameters in the range 30 to 70 Š. The feedstock may be pretreated to remove metals by HF treatment or by solvent precipitation with propane, butane, mixtures of propane and butane, pentane, hexane or naphtha.</p> |
