A document cover supporting mechanism for a copying apparatus has a hinge bracket (7) to be mounted to the apparatus housing and a cover support member (5) pivotal about a shaft (14) carried by the hinge bracket (7). A positioning member (15) is mounted to the hinge bracket (7) and has a first frictional surface (16) which is convex about a horizontal axis (16a). A contact member (19), which is mounted to the support member (5), has a second frictional surface (26) which is convex about a horizontal axis and is resiliently pushed against the first frictional surface (16). The contact member (19) and positioning member (15) are so relatively positioned that in the horizontal cover closed position the point of contact is so located that the cover is biased downwardly while the mechanism is capable of supporting the cover in its raised position for replacement of a document to be copied.
