The procedure for regenerating catalyst-coated motor vehicle exhaust gas purifiers is for purifiers whose effectiveness has been impaired by the deposition of fuel- borne contaminants. It involves passing through gas pref. at 650-1100 deg.C, more pref. between 850 and 1000 deg.C, through the purifier. For purifiers using a rhodium-bearing catalyst at least, inert gas is used. Leaving the purifier the gas flows through a filler which traps the extracted contaminants; it may then be recycled. The gas may be cooled between purifier and filter, to ensure deposition of all contaminants.
