The apparatus for welding together spatially fixed pipes is provided with a circular rail releasably fastened to a pipe (1) along a circumference. A carriage (25) movable around the pipe (1) and having a welding head (80) is arranged on this circular rail. The welding head (80) is supplied with electric welding current and protective gas via flexible connecting lines. The carriage (25) has a drive which allows it to travel alternately through 360 DEG in the one direction and through 360 DEG in the opposite direction. Two devices (81, 82) for feeding wire-shaped welding material to the welding location are provided on the carriage (25). The two feed devices (81, 82) are arranged in the peripheral direction of the pipe (1) and symmetrically to the welding head (80). Control means are available, which are designed in such a way that they activate one of the two feed devices (81, 82) in one direction of movement of the carriage and the other feed device in the opposite direction of movement. With the apparatus, welding material can be fed into the seam during every to-and-fro movement of the carriage so that the individual weld layers become more uniform in their thickness. <IMAGE>
