The hinged general-purpose keel with symmetrically or non-symmetrically spreadable fins is suitable for all types of sizes of sailing craft. It comprises a short fixed element, tightly enveloped by a fin in two halves when these are together. The entire assembly including the fixed element is tiltable perpendicularly to the craft's centreplane. Additionally the half-fins can be tilted independently, by hydraulic or pneumatic means. The half-fin mating surfaces are flat apart from the recess for the fixed element. Outer surfaces are hydrodynamically-optimally shaped to provide increased righting moment when used independently.
