Testing contents of opaque sealed deformable containers - uses measurement of dimensional change caused by variation of external forces

A method of testing the fluid contents of opaque sealed deformable containers is applicable for quality control, esp. in the manufacture of motor cars. The containers may be rubber boots contg. lubricant for back axle shafts connected to each linked shaft component by clamping bands. Forces acting externally on the container are varied in a controlled manner and the associated dimensional change measured to give an indication of the contents of compressible gas and incompressible fluid. The forces may be varied by applying pressure in a chamber or by reducing the pressure in a vacuum chamber in which the container is placed. Alternatively, the forces may be applied by a mechanical arrangement, e.g using attached weights. The dimension change may be measured mechanically or optically.
