Method of making a bearing material in which an overlay predominantly of tin is applied directly to an aluminium alloy backing without a nickel interlayer. The method comprises an alkaline wash, an acid wash, a zincating step and a tin deposition step from a solution of stannous sulphate, followed by a solution of stannous fluoroborate. A bearing material and a plain steel-backed bearing having an aluminium alloy and a direct overlay of predominantly tin without a nickel interlayer are also described.
