The chain stitch seam comprises parts of loops which pass over the edge of the piece and cross one another in this region. In the process, the chain stitch seam is produced by a needle thread 1 being guided through a thread loop 2 on a first looper 6, after which a loop on the needle thread 1 is received by a second looper 7 and guided around the edge of the piece 5, after which the thread 3 of the second looper 7 is guided through the loops of the needle thread 1 and the thread 2 on the first looper 6. The thread loop 3 of the second looper 7 is secured by the first looper 6, whilst the rest of the loops are cast off from the second looper 7 and tightened around a part of the loop secured by the first looper. The second part of the loop is guided by the second looper 7 around the edge of the piece 5 in the motional direction of the needle 4 when this penetrates the piece 5. Full tightening of the stitch is carried out after the thread loop 3 on the second looper 7 is cast off by the first looper 6. The apparatus for producing the chain stitch seam comprises a needle 4, a first looper 6 and a second looper 7, the relative positions and motions of which enable the second looper 7 to be guided around the edge of the piece 5, the needle 4 and the first looper 6 in the order described above. The invention can be used to sew together nets in the production of trawl nets, circular nets, etc. Owing to an improved shape of the loops over the edge and their connection with other loops, a stronger and more reliable locking together of the stitches is realized, loosening of the knots being avoided in the event of damage. <IMAGE>
