Controlled stop for machine slide - has pneumatic actuator to operate clamps against flexible steel tape fixed to machine

A positioning stop for mfg. machine use a pneumatically actuated clamp operating against a steel tape. The carriage (12) moves parallel to the main frame (10) of the machine and follows a steel tape (14) that is secured at each end to the frame. The carriage has a fixed block (20) with an inset pad of brake material (52). A rod (22) coupled to a piston (36) carries a second pad (50) of braking material and is in contact with the steel tape. When the required position of the carriage is reached compressed air (44) is applied to one side (42) of the piston to cause the pads to grip the tape. The use of a flexible tape avoids the need to place close tolerances of the carriage relative to the frame surface.
