Heat treating cold rolled steel - using furnace with naked flame to burn off rolling lubricant

Metal plate esp. cold rolled steel plate, is heat treated without prior degreasing after e.g. rolling by exposing it, at least during the initial period of heat treatment to naked flame pref. in condition of incomplete combustion. Burning off the oil rather than merely attempting to evaporate it off, during a short heat treatment in cracked conversion is in prior art, ensures the absence of carbon on the metal surface and saves the need for degreasing, thus ensuring that corrosion resistance is not diminished by the pressure of surface carbon.
