The modification is to a telephone set with pushbutton number selection and facilities for storing and recalling frequently used numbers and is intended to widen the range of automatic number selection. A hand operated optoelectronic reader (4) is attached to the telephone set. With it a name and number printed in a form suitable for automatic character recognition can be read and entered into the telephone memory. It can be used immediately to select the number read, or the number can first be set up an alpha-numeric display (5) for verification and then selected, for example by lifting the handset. Infrequently used numbers need not therefore be entered into the memory for automatic selection. The set also has a pushbutton panel (1), stored number selection panel (2) and a name selection panel (3). When using any one of these possibilities, the number or name selected can be displayed.
