Method in acid aq. soln. comprises passing the soln, successively through cathode and anode compartments of an electrolytic cell utilising a water permeable separator, and a graphite cathode coated with Pt, Ru or their alloy, witha potential difference between the electrodes. The anode may also be of graphite coated with Pt and/or Ru. The graphite pref. has a density of at least 1.7g/cc and the coating on it is at least 0.1 micron thick. Thallic ion solns. are used for oxidising unsatd. ethyleneic cpds. such as defines or aromatic alkenyl cpds. such as styrene, to glycal and/or carbonyl cpds, (aldehydes or ketones), and esp. for mfr. of phenyl acetaldehyde from styrene. The cathodes exhibits an excellent initial intensity potential characteristic and a very high cathode potential stability with time. Hence they can be used at current densities high enough to use industrially.
|
