A battery of self-priming cells 6 is disclosed comprising insulating plates (14) each having a peripheral flange (15) and a strip (27a) which is parallel to and spaced from a rectilinear edge (15b) of the plate. The strip (27a) on each plate fits into a groove (28) in an adjacent plate so that a conduit (29) is formed between each adjacent pair of plates (6) through which electrolyte passes when priming takes plate. The strip (27a) is shorter than the rectilinear edge so that the bottom of the conduit (29) opens into a compartment (16) formed between the adjacent pair, in which the electrodes (7) are placed. The provision of the conduit (29) reduces the possibility of two adjacent element being short circuited by the electrolyte once priming is complete. It also enables more rapid filling of the elements as it enables purging of the air upwards.
