1528096 Making optical fibres COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE 29 April 1976 [30 April 1975] 17566/76 Heading C1M In a process for making an optical glass fibre a tube and rod (e.g. of pure silica which may be doped with B 2 0 3 ) are each coated with a layer which may be the same or different of one or more of the oxides of Al, As, B, Be, Ge, Li, Mg, P, Sb and Zn from a solution or suspension of the oxide(s), the bar and tube are heated separately to agglomerate the coatings and adhere them to their substrate, the bar is inserted in the tube and the composite is heated and drawn to a fibre. In an alternative embodiment the coated tube and bar may be heated, prior to insertion, to vitrefy the coatings. The coated rod or tube may be coated one or more times from compositions which may have varying amounts of dopants therein, prior to insertion. The tube may be coated both internally and externally, the external coating being removed prior to heating. After drawing the fibre may be coated with a lower RI plastics material (e.g. PTFE). |
