A heavy duty truck tire 10 has a tread 12 comprising a plurality of independent projections 30 arranged in circumferentially extending rows 32, 34, 36 separated by circumferentially extending zig-zag or undulating grooves 38, the projections 30 in each row being separated from one another by grooves 46 less than 1 mm wide. When in the footprint of the tire 10 the grooves 46 close so that adjacent projections 30 act together to resist lateral and circumferential forces acting upon the tire. The grooves 46 are inclined at 70 DEG -85 DEG to the circumferential, and the ratio CW/L may be 0.6-1.9. In each shoulder region of the tread there may be a continuous circumferential rib, e.g. 26, as shown, or a row of independent projections, the width of this rib or row being 15-25% the total tread width. <IMAGE> |
