Exhaust driven turbocharger for IC engine - has by=pass valve between compressor and turbine opened by suction at turbine inlet

The turbocharger has a centrifugal compressor (12) delivering air to the engine which is directly coupled to a turbine (22) driven by the exhaust gases from the engine (6). There is a valve (28) between the outlet of the compressor and the inlet of the turbine. When the compressor pressure rises above a preset value it opens the valve against a spring (32). A chamber (34) containing the spring has a connection (36) to the turbine inlet. The opening force is thus increased if the turbine inlet pressure drops. This ensures prompt opening of the valve as soon as flow conditions require such opening.
